Explanation of Terminology

Audience

Page heading "For The______," gives users of this guide a general idea whether a program is suitable for them. The "Target Audience" entry in each page narrows down the audience as needed. Page headings in use are:

(1) “For The Public” (including students and teachers, if the sponsor does not offer specific scheduling/content for educational groups. When such distinctions are made, there are separate entries for each applicable group.

(2) “For Teachers” (self-explanatory).

(3) “For Students” (specifically designed or scheduled for school classes or youth groups, including projects that may be undertaken by entire schools).

Nature of Activity

General nature of the service. This is supplemented by the "Description" entry on each page. Terms in use are:

(1) “Presentations” (lectures, speeches, audiovisual shows, etc., that are not designed as formal class sessions).

(2) “Meetings” (regular public sessions that include environmental-education programs).

(3) “Classes” (formal classroom-type teaching sessions for public or students, even if supplemented by field or hands-on work at the school or sponsor's site).

(4) “Field Trips” (activities in which outdoor observation or visit to sponsor's facility is the total or primary experience).

(5) “Training” (offerings designed to enhance participants' skills, especially if for professional credit or to qualify the participants for an activity, and regardless of format or location [i.e., classes, field trips, etc., are all designated as training if aimed at skill development).

(6) “Projects” (activities in which primary focus is development of hands-on experience via creation of a concrete product or result).

(7) “Media” (offerings which provide information without personal contact, e.g., publications, teaching materials, television series, videos, World Wide Web sites, etc.).

(8) “Volunteer” opportunities (offerings in which the individual learns by helping to carry out the regular work of the sponsor organization).
