Nearly all of the millions of different types of plants and animals that have ever lived on Earth have died out, or become extinct. New plants and animals develop to replace older ones. This happens ver slowly over millions of years, and is called evolution. Many species lived and died before the first people appeared.

But it is happening quicker now. Species are becoming extinct 1,000 times faster than they did before human-beings first appeared.
